| Documents required | Upon arrival, ALFA students have to contact the IRO of Valenciennes and provide the following documents in order to obtain the UVHC student's card: 3 passport-size photographs |
| Accommodation available for exchange students | At the UVHC, students can rent a room in one of the halls of residence which are managed by CROUS, the regional affiliates of the French national student-service agency (http://www.crous-lille.fr/) . Each year, the IRO reserves a sufficient number of rooms at the main halls of residence for its international students arriving in the framework of a mobility programme. Detailed information about accommodation available can be found on UVHC's homepage at http://www.univ-valenciennes.fr/RI/RI-anglais/J_accommodation_gb.htm The halls offer furnished rooms with the possibility to have internet access and shared services such as cafeteria, coin laundries and game rooms. Monthly rents for students spending a six-months period during AY 2005/06 in Valenciennes at the “Jules Mousseron” Hall ( http://www.crous-lille.fr/residences/rez.php?id=7 ) are: A safety deposit of about 150 € will be requested upon arrival by the CROUS which will be given back at the end of the stay, if no damage has been done in the room. Financial help “allocation de logement” is available to students of any nationalities who rent housing in France . The precise amount of the monthly assistance varies according to the student's income, the type of housing and the amount of the rent. For the “Jules Mousseron” hall, the assistance is “Allocation de logement social” (ALS). Payments are made by local family assistance funds (Caisse d'Allocation Familiale CAF). In order to obtain financial housing assistance, students need to have the residency permit. At Jules Mousseron, count on around 35 € / month for a single room and on around 115 € / month for a single studio. Students will have to complete a guarantee form to be filled in by a EEA citizen, otherwise the rent must be paid in advance every three months. | Cost of living | Provisional monthly budget required : 430 € in order to obtain the residency permit. According to the accommodation booked, the budget required should be higher. Few price guidelines : - UVHC student card (giving full access to all University services, library, canteen, etc. covering insurance and giving reductions for cultural events and public transport) 18.43 € - a University canteen ticket 2.65 € - food (local supermarket June 2005): • 1 kg potatoes = 1.00 € • 1 kg rice = 0.63 € • 1 kg rump steak = 15.25 € • 1 kg apples = 1.20 € • 1 l whole milk sterilized = 0.76 € • 1 l mineral water = 0.28 € • 1 “baguette” French bread 250 g = 0.50 € - public transport in Valenciennes (bus only): • single ticket = 1.30 € • monthly student card = 28.50 € - Leisure activities in Valenciennes: • national museum = free for student card holders • national theatre = 20 € for 5 events (abo jeunes 2005/06) • concerts = prices range from free to about 30 € • cinema = from 5 to 8 € - general practitioner (doctor) = 20 € Free medical care such as vaccinations and health advice available on campus. |
| Language courses offered | French courses are offered free of charge to international students at three levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced) during the whole AY. Courses are taught at the Faculty of Humanities and classes start in October. |
| Orientation/Welcome Programme | An integration seminar is offered to international students arriving in the framework of a mobility programme before classes begin. | Visa and other permits | Visa requirements: Citizens belonging to the European Economic Area (EEA) States do not require a visa to enter France. The must bring with them a valid national identity card or their national passport. Students who are not belonging to those countries and who want
to stay longer than 3 months, have to apply for a long-stay
student visa (“visa de long séjour”)

| Insurances required | Health Care: Students from countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area States must join the French social security regime for students if studying in France for more than three months. In 2005/06 the cost is 180 €. It is optional, but recommended to join a student mutual fund (about 110 € for basic medial care).
