| Project Objectives | 1- To study the effects of the characteristics of the solvent and the agitation rate on the mass transfer of naphthalene (as an example of recalcitrant compound) between the organic phase (Silicon oil at three different viscosities: 10, 20 and 50 cSt) and the aqueous phase The influence of the presence of surfactants will be also analyzed.. 2- To express the results obtained in point 1 in a non dimensional correlation, in order to make it valid for other type of agitation and reactor. 3- To study the effect of different Reynold’s numbers and surfactant’s concentrations on the enzyme activity and stability, as well as studying different improving techniques. 4- To determine the optimal conditions (organic phase viscosity, w, surfactants) for the degradation process. |
| Required skills | - Good laboratory skills in general. - Know how to work with different computational software: Excel, Table curve 3D… |
| Techniques to be used | - Extraction of anthracene with hexane. - HPLC to follow anthracene’s evolution with time. - GC/MS for determining low concentrations of anthracene (ppb). - Spectrophotometrical determination of enzyme activities. |
| Schedule of Activities | June - Determination of kLa for antrhacene (solvent 1). July- Determination of kLa for anthracene (solvents 2 and 3). August- Effect of mixture, ? and surfactant’s concentration over enzyme activity (solvetn 1). Study of possible stabilizing cofactors for the enzyme. September - Effect of mixture, w and surfactant’s concentration over enzyme activity (solvents 2 and 3). October - Proposal of the model and validation. Optimization of the operation parameters. November- Model justification. |
