![]() Jornal de Noticias© Invitation by the Chairman of the Organising Committee
The European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) established
the Section on Biochemical Engineering Science in August 1995 by interlinking
the Working Parties on Bioreactor Performance, Downstream Processing and
Measurement and Control. The Section aims to involve as many researchers
as possible in its activity and has decided to promote and organize the
ESBES Symposium Series. ESBES 1 took place in Dublin, in 1996. Now in Porto, ESBES 2 will have the
very same aim of bringing together young and established researchers from
universities, research institutes and industry to discuss the various subdisciplines
of biochemical engineering. Furthermore, ESBES 2 will provide a timely opportunity
to discuss new initiatives in research collaboration for the forthcoming
EC Framework V Programme.
The Symposium theme, Biochemical Engineering Science for the Quality of Life,
will particularly address new developments in the fields of Cell Factories,
Food and Environment. Specific Symposium topics will include -
ESBES 2 will be held in the 'Seminário do Vilar'
Conference Center, in the City of Porto, Portugal, from September 16 to
19, 1998.
Porto is a City rich in history and culture, with its historical Old Centre recently classified by
UNESCO as a World Heritage. Situated in the right bank of the River Douro,
near the River Estuary which opens into the Atlantic, it is Portugal's second largest city and is
considered the capital of Northern Portugal, a region of commerce and industry, but also of striking beauty.
Today Porto is a City very easily accessible from abroad,
with many direct flights to Francisco Sá Carneiro International Airport,
situated about 13 km from the City Centre.
The 'Seminário de Vilar' is a recently built Conference Centre,
near the heart of the City, with
spacious facilities for both small and large meetings.
Overlooking the River Douro, it provides a secluded, relaxed
and quiet environment both for formal and informal discussion and exchange of ideas.
It is within 5-10 minutes walking distance of hotels,
restaurants and modern shopping centers and is a mere 20-30 minute walk from
the picturesque historical Old City.

Authors wishing to present a contribution are asked to submit an Abstract of
1 A4 page by April 30, 1998, at the latest.
The abstract should emphasize the aim of the research presented
and include a short description of the methods involved, together
with an overview of the results and conclusions.
The required Abstract format and the procedure for electronic submission
are described here. This very same information
will be sent by e-mail or normal mail upon specific request to the Conference Secretariat.
Authors are encouraged to employ the
electronic submission procedure described on this WWW site,
but contributions may also be sent by normal mail on paper, together with a file on a
floppy disk (3-1/2", PC format), using Microsoft WORD.
The Scientific Committee is responsible for the selection of Abstracts for inclusion in the Symposium.
A limited number of Abstracts will be selected for oral presentation.
The Authors of these contributions will be asked to submit a
short 4-6 page paper.
Notification of acceptance of the Abstracts and of the type of presentation will
be sent to the Authors by June 1, 1998.
Posters should not exceed 120 cm in width and 160 cm in height.
The panels have a hard plastic-type surface.
Please bring and use only removable adhesive stuff.
Posters will be displayed from 16th (14:00) to 19th (13:00) September.
Poster presentation sessions will be held on 17th and 18th September (15:50-18:00).
The selected Abstracts and short papers by invited speakers together with selected oral presentations
will be published as symposium proceedings, which will be handed to the participants.
A limited number of Abstracts authors will be invited to submit
full papers for a dedicated issue of the
Journal of Biotechnology,
which will be published after the Symposium.
It is expected and required for publication that for each paper at least
one author will register for the meeting.
